Keeping Your Dentures Looking White & Clean
A brand new set of dentures can restore your smile and give you a boosted sense of self-confidence. We want you to get the most out of your dentures by helping you to keep them looking white.
One of the most common questions we get regarding the maintenance of dentures is how to prevent stains and keep them clean. In this article, we’ll take a look at a few things you can do to extend the life of your dentures and make sure your smile looks it’s best.
Clean Your Dentures Properly
In a perfect world, you should brush your dentures after every meal. We understand that life can be busy so make sure you’re brushing your dentures at least once a day. If you can, give your dentures a rinse after eating.
Make sure that you rinse and clean your mouth as well, to remove any food or debris that was caught between your mouth and dentures.
Avoid using toothbrushes with stiff bristles or any kinds of toothpaste that contain whitening agents. Both of these products can cause damage to your dentures, which can create more places for bacteria to hide.
Soak Your Dentures Overnight
Soaking your dentures overnight is important for maintaining their shape, color, and cleanliness.
Although your dentures look solid to the naked eye, they actually have many tiny pores. These pores can absorb the color of your food and drinks and give bacteria places to hide.
If you soak your dentures overnight, it will help to kill off the hiding bacteria and lift leftover food residues that your toothbrush can’t reach. This also helps to prevent any foul odors from building up.
Watch What You Eat & Drink
Wearing dentures doesn’t mean that you have to give up your favorite foods. However, there are a few things that you should try to avoid consuming frequently to keep your dentures looking white and natural.
Some foods you may want to avoid include berries, tomato sauce, curry, coffee, pop or soda, and red wine. Many of these products contain natural pigments or added food colouring which can stain your teeth over time.
If you choose to eat some of these foods, it’s not a big deal in moderation. Simply try to clean your dentures within half an hour to an hour to minimize the chances of stains.
