Getting Your Sugar Fix With Dentures
Most of us get the craving for candies, chocolates, or something sweet from time to time. Wearing dentures doesn’t mean you have to forget about the occasional treat after a meal.
Although you should try to keep your sugar intake to a minimum, it’s not necessary to cut it out from your diet entirely.
The trick to getting your sugar fix with dentures is picking the right dessert that won’t cause too much stress on your mouth or lasting damage to your new teeth.
Let’s take a look at how you can treat yourself with minimal concern.
1. Avoid Hard & Sticky Candies
Sticky sweets can easily become stuck in between your teeth and potentially cause them to become loose. It can also be quite difficult to properly clean any leftover residue from sticky candies.
Chewing gum is one particular sweet that you should avoid altogether.
Hard candies tend to break into smaller (and sharp) pieces which can get lodged between your dentures can gum, causing pain and irritation.
2. Eat Your Sweets With Meals
If you are going to eat sweets, try to eat them with your meals. Your mouth naturally produces more saliva while you eat, which helps to breakdown and dissolve the sweets. The saliva may also reduce the amount of sugar that ends up stuck to your teeth and left behind.
Drinking a glass of water immediately after will also help remove any leftover sugar.
3. Clean Your Dentures As Soon As You Can
Sugar and bacteria get along quite well. If you don’t clean your dentures, the bacteria can form plaque on your dentures. Plaque can cause more harm to your mouth and gums if left untreated.
